As the climate crisis escalates, so does the race for climate solutions. Billion-dollar tech companies and startups alike are investing in carbon capture, smart grids, climate AI, lab-grown meat, and geoengineering. But with this boom in climate technology, a difficult question arises: Are we solving the problem, or just inventing new ones?
This blog takes a critical and opinionated look at the ethics behind the climate tech boom. It explores how innovations that promise sustainability may reinforce global inequality, benefit corporations more than communities, or even distract from real, systemic solutions.
What Is Climate Tech?
Climate technology refers to any innovation or system designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions or adapt to climate change. This includes:
- Carbon capture and storage (CCS) (IEA)
- Direct air capture (Climeworks)
- Electric vehicles (EVs) (Tesla)
- Lab-grown or plant-based meat (Impossible Foods)
- AI for climate modelling
- Geoengineering experiments (Nature)

It sounds hopeful, but is it truly green?
Green Tech vs Greenwashing: What’s the Difference?
Greenwashing is the act of falsely portraying something as environmentally friendly. Many companies use the label of “sustainability” while continuing harmful practices (Earth.org).
Examples of Greenwashing:
- Oil companies are promoting carbon offsets while expanding fossil fuel operations.
- Big Tech is investing in climate while consuming massive energy for data centres.
It’s not just about innovation — it’s about who controls the narrative. Many climate tech companies are profiting from a crisis they helped create, without making meaningful sacrifices.
The Inequality of Climate Innovation
Most green technologies are produced in the Global North, while the Global South bears the brunt of climate impacts. This dynamic reinforces historical injustice. For example:
- E-waste from solar panels and EVs is often dumped in African and South Asian countries.
- Indigenous communities are displaced for lithium mining (NRDC)
Green tech without climate justice is just colonialism with a solar panel.
The Case of Carbon Capture: Fix or Fantasy?
Carbon capture is widely promoted by industries as a net-zero strategy. But the IPCC has warned that it cannot replace emissions cuts (IPCC). Critics argue it’s a distraction that lets polluters off the hook (Climate Network).
ExxonMobil touts CCS while investing billions in oil expansion. CCS isn’t a silver bullet — it’s becoming a corporate shield.
Climate AI: Who’s It Helping?
AI is used to forecast floods, manage energy, and even optimise agriculture. But it also raises questions: – Who controls the data? – How energy-intensive are these systems? – Who benefits from the predictive power?
Meta and Google’s AI models require huge server farms powered by fossil fuels. Can Meta hide from accountability after installing a few solar panels in their system? If climate AI isn’t democratised and open-source, it may become a tool of corporate surveillance rather than planetary healing.
Is Geoengineering a Climate Solution or a Moral Hazard?
Geoengineering — like releasing aerosols to reflect sunlight — is being considered as a last-ditch option. But scientists warn it could:
- Alter weather patterns
- Lead to international conflict
- Cause unintended ecological damage
Geoengineering feels like climate change denial with extra steps.
What We’re Not Talking About: Systemic Change

The focus on climate tech often distracts from the real issue: we need to consume less and redistribute more. Degrowth advocates suggest scaling down production for ecological balance. Indigenous movements emphasise land back and ecological reciprocity (LandBack)
But these ideas get little investment compared to flashy tech. Climate tech is sexy. System change is not. That’s why the money flows to apps, not activism.
The Better Way Forward: Ethical, Just Innovation
To avoid greenwashing, climate tech should:
- Be community-led, not corporate-led
- Address climate reparations and access in the Global South
- Include gender equity and labour rights
- Be regulated and transparent
Final Thoughts: Tech Can’t Save Us — But People Can
Innovation has a role to play, but it is not a substitute for public policy, cultural shifts, or reparative justice. If climate tech doesn’t confront power — who holds it, who benefits — then it will be just another arm of the status quo.
We need solutions rooted in equity, ecology, and empathy, not just efficiency.
